CORBINIAN, Saint. - Bishop, one of the evangelizers of Germany, b. at Châtres-Arpajon near Melun under the reign of Clotaire III, around 670. As a young man, he withdrew to a solitary life in a hut in his native region. Having gone to Rome in 710 to retire near the basilicas, which were the greatest signs of the faith to which he had dedicated his life, he received from Pope Constantine the order to preach the word of God in France and in Germany.

Gregory II sent him to Bavaria, which became the center of his abundantly fruitful apostolate. He had already brought Duke Grimoald back to the path of honor, when he settled at Freising, not yet erected as a diocese. There he suffered persecutions, which drove him, until the death of Grimoald, into the Tyrol. Having returned to his church of Freising, he died there in 725 (according to another tradition in 730). His cult spread in the 8th century and in the following one. Feast on 8 Sept. Arbeo or Aribo, bishop of Freising, collected his life (ed. S. Riezler, in Abhandlungen d. Bayr. Akad., 18 [1889], pp. 219-72; B. Krusch, in MGH, Scriptores Rerum Merovingicarum, VI, pp. 497-635).
