CORBINIANO, saint. - Bishop, one of the evangelizers of Germany, born at Châtres-Arpajon near Melun under the reign of Clotario III, about 670. As a young man, he withdrew to a solitary life in a hut in his native region. Having gone to Rome in 710 to retire near the basilicas, which were the greatest symbols of the faith to which he had dedicated his life, he received from Pope Costantino the command to preach the word of God in France and Germany.
Gregorio II sent him to Bavaria, which became the centre of his abundantly fruitful apostolate. He had already brought Duke Grimoaldo back to the path of honour when he settled at Frisinga, not yet erected into a diocese. There he suffered persecutions, which drove him into Tyrol until Grimoaldo’s death. Having returned to his church at Frisinga, he died there in 725 (according to another tradition, in 730). His cult spread in the eighth century and in the following one. Feast day, 8 September. Arbeo or Aribone, bishop of Frisinga, compiled his life (ed. S. Riezler, in Abhandlungen d. Bayr.
