ANSHELM, VALERIUS. - Chronicler, b. at Rottweil in Württemberg, d. at Bern in 1546. In 1504 he settled in Bern, where he devoted himself to teaching. He then went to Rottweil, but soon had to flee from that city because of the persecutions against the Protestants and take refuge, around 1528, in Bern again. He was one of the first to embrace the Swiss Protestant Reformation and was in direct contact with Zwingli himself. He wrote the Chronicle of Bern, which runs from the most ancient times down to his own era.
