ANNONE, saint. - Archbishop of Cologne, born c. 1010 in Swabia, died 4 Dec. 1075. He became provost of the canons at Goslar and in 1056 archbishop of Cologne. He was regent, together with the widowed queen, for the underage heir apparent Enrico (IV), but in 1062 he seized the latter and governed Germany until 1063, when he had to yield before the famous Adalberto of Hamburg. Although impetuous in character, he rendered great services to the kingdom and also to the Church, administering his diocese excellently and founding several abbeys (that of Siegburg is famous); he is especially praiseworthy for his faithful attitude toward Alessandro II (1061-73) in the latter’s critical struggle against the antipope Cadalo of Parma and the emperor Enrico IV. Around 1100 he was glorified in the celebrated Song of A. (in MGH, Deutsche Chroniken, I, II, pp. 63-132; vedi alla voce seguente).
