OTLO, OF SAINT EMMERAM. - Monk and scholastic of the monastery of St. Emmeram in Regensburg, who lived between 1010 and 1070.

Among his writings mention should be made of the Dialogus de tribus quaestionibus and the autobiographical Liber de tentationibus suis, varia fortuna et scriptis, in which he recounts how, while he was occupied with secular sciences, he was assailed by doubt concerning what he read in the sacred books, about the nature of God and His omnipotence and providence, and how he was saved by keeping away from the clamor of dialectical disputes (which had invaded the cathedral and monastic schools) and devoting himself to the meditation of Holy Scripture and to the practice of the religious life. Like St. Peter Damian, he too does not condemn dialectic and secular knowledge except insofar as he perceives in them a weakening of faith.
