PETER OF AUVERGNE. - A disciple of St. Thomas in Paris, he was first a master in the Faculty of Arts, then studied theology under Henry of Ghent (v.) and Godfrey of Fontaines. A master in theology around 1296, at this date or not long after he disputed his Quodlibeta. Bishop of Clermont from 1302, he died in 1304.
He completed St. Thomas's commentary on De caelo, on the Politics and, partially, on the Meteorologica. But on the Politics he also wrote, as a master of arts, a commentary of his own. He was also the author of Quaestiones in Metaphysicam and on the Parva naturalia. In this first period of his teaching, he came under the direct influence of Thomistic Aristotelianism (v.). In a second period the Thomistic influence is neutralized in part by that of his theology masters and especially of Godfrey, for example, on the principle of individuation (v.), on the distinction between essence and existence, on the relationship between intellect and will (v.).
In agreement with other thinkers of the Avicennian-Augustinian current, he posits in man a twofold agent intellect: one intrinsic to the soul and multiple, and another separate and unique. He is not an original thinker, but one inclined to deepen the opinions of others and reconcile them.
