HENRY III, King of England. - B. at Winchester on 1 Oct. 1207, d. on 16 Nov. 1272. Already in 1216 he held the regency upon the death of his father, John Lackland, under the guardianship of the Earl of Pembroke and the Bishop of Winchester. From the outset H. sided with the papal policy in the violent politico-ecclesiastical struggles of the 13th century.

His disorderly and partial financial management made him hated and caused the intervention in 1231 of Archbishop Edmund Rich of Canterbury. The papal legate Otto of St. Nicholas, at H.'s request, issued decrees of reform at the Synods of London (1237 to 1239) and Oxford (1241). Bishops and nobles wrested from the king new liberties and a more careful observance of Magna Carta. Enmities with the barons, despotism and weakness made him increasingly unpopular toward the end of his reign.
