HENRY I OF MAINZ. - Archbishop of Mainz from 27 Sept. 1142 until 7 June 1153; he was particularly attentive to ecclesiastical discipline and monastic life; he directed the administration of the German Empire in 1147-48 while the emperor Conrad III was taking part in the Second Crusade. For having opposed the election of Frederick Barbarossa, he was deposed at Worms on 7 June 1153 following the pressure that the king exerted on Pope Eugene III, with whom E. had already had a conflict. E. retired to Eimbeck, where he died on 2 Sept. 1153.
