ENRICO I di MAGONZA. — Archbishop of Mainz from 27 September 1142 until 7 June 1153; he devoted particular attention to ecclesiastical discipline and monastic life; he directed the administration of the German Empire in 1147–48 while the incorporator Corrado III was participating in the Second Crusade. Because he opposed the election of Federico Barbarossa, he was deposed at Worms
on 7 June 1153 following the pressure that the king exerted on Pope Eugenio III, with whom E. had already previously been in conflict. E. withdrew to Eimbeck, where he died on 2 September 1153.
