ENRICO II of Mainz. — Archbishop of Mainz from 15 May 1286 until 17–18 March 1288, a Franciscan, son of a baker, born at Isny in Swabia, he was a lector in the convents of Lucerne, Basel, and Mainz. Highly esteemed and recommended by King Rudolf of Habsburg, he was appointed Bishop of Basel by Pope Gregory X in 1275, and in 1286, by Pope Honorius IV, elevated to the primatial see of the German Empire. He rendered the king the most valuable services through prudent counsel, military aid, diplomatic missions, and fruitful mediation both at home and abroad, without neglecting the spiritual and temporal interests of his archbishopric.
