ENRICO II of MAGONZA. - Archbishop of Magonza from 15 May 1286 until 17–18 March 1288, a Franciscan and son of a baker, born at Isny in Swabia, he was lector in the convents of Lucerne, Basel, and Magonza. Esteemed and recommended by King Rodolfo di Asburgo, he was appointed bishop of Basel by Pope Gregorio X in 1275, and in 1286 was elevated by Pope Onorio IV to the foremost episcopal see of the German Empire. He rendered the King most valuable services through prudent counsel, military aid, diplomatic legations, and fruitful activity as a mediator both within and abroad, without neglecting the spiritual and temporal interests of his archbishopric.
