HENRI-JOSEPH FARAUD. — Born 17 March 1823 at Gigondas (France), died 26 September 1890 at St. Boniface (Canada). Oblate of Mary Immaculate in 1844, he was sent to the Canadian Northwest mission in 1846, where in 1851 he founded the mission at Lake Athabasca. In 1856 he became the first missionary to visit the Indians of Great Slave Lake, and in 1858–59 worked among the Indians of the Peace River area. In 1862 he was named first Apostolic Vicar of the Mackenzie River. He developed and consolidated the Indian missions throughout his vast territory. He authored several books in the Montagnais language.
He wrote: *Dix-huit ans chez les sauvages* (2nd ed., Paris 1870); *Quarante ans chez les sauvages d'Athabasca-Mackenzie* (in *Les missions catholiques*, Lyon 1888).
