Faraud, Henri-Joseph

FARAUD, HENRI-JOSEPH. - B. March 17, 1823 at Gigondas (France), d. Sept. 26, 1890 at St-Boniface (Canada). An Oblate of Mary Immaculate in 1844, he was sent to the mission of the Canadian northwest in 1846, where in 1851 he founded the mission of Lake Athabasca. In 1856 he visited as the first missionary the Indians at Great Slave Lake, and in the years 1858 and 1859 he worked among the Indians of the Peace River. In 1862 he was appointed first vicar apostolic of the Mackenzie River. He developed and consolidated the Indian missions of his vast territory. He was the author of several books in the Mountain language.

He wrote: Dix-huit aux chez les sauvages (2nd ed., Paris 1870); Quarante aux chez les sauvages d'Athabasca-Mackenzie (in Les missions catholiques, Lyon 1888).
