He also illustrated in lofty prose the works of Thorvaldsen, Camuccini, Benvenuti, of whom he was a friend and secretary, of the sculptors Pampoloni, Bartolini, Ricci, and of the painters Sabatelli and Bezzuoli. «A fine and rare Italian», as Giordini defined him, M. wished to commemorate in more than 500 epigraphs the glories of illustrious Italians and their discoveries in the sciences, letters, and arts (Siena 1838) and also wrote a Life of Dante.
He enjoyed the friendship of Cardinal Consalvi, Tommaseo, Leopardi, and G. Belli. His principal works are: I sermoni (Livorno 1829), in which the precepts of the Romagna classical school are reaffirmed; the translation of the Satires of Q. Settano (Pisa 1820); Il pericolo di seppellire gli uomini vivi creduti morti (Milan 1837), one of the first treatises on the institution of cemeteries. As a priest he compiled Annamastramonti and prayers drawn from Holy Scripture and the Fathers (Prato 1826) and composed a short spiritual treatise: Di alcuni offici di onestà (Padua 1827). At his death a memorial was decreed for him in the cloister of Santa Croce; the inscription was composed by Abbot G. Manuzzi.
