MISSIONS CATHOLIQUES, LES. - Illustrated monthly missionary review, published since 1868 by the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, in Lyon. Initially weekly, from 1928 to 1942 bimonthly, and monthly from then on.
It reports on Catholic missionary activity and contains above all original accounts by missionaries, including of an ethnographic and religious-studies nature. It was translated into several languages, though in such a way that the various editions retained an ever greater independence, especially with articles on the work of missionaries from their own country. The Italian edition, Le missioni cattoliche, published since 1871 in Milan by the Istituto delle Missioni Estere di Milano, reports mainly, in long accounts, on the missionary activity of the Institute. Other editions are: the German, since 1873 (Die katholischen Missionen); the Dutch, since 1874 (De Katholieke Missiën); the Polish, since 1881 (Missye Katolickie); the Hungarian, since 1881 (A Kath. Hitlerjesztés Lapini, since 1925 under the title: Katholikus Missziók); the English, since 1885 (Illustrated catholic missions); the Spanish, since 1892 (Las misiones católicas); the English of the United States, since 1906 (Catholic missions). Mainly from the First World War onward these editions became entirely independent of the French one. Subsequently new reviews arose under the same title: thus a Slovenian one in 1923 (Katolicki Misijoni), a Slovak one in 1928 (Katolicki Misie), a Lithuanian one in 1931 (Misijos), an English one for Ireland in 1934 (Catholic missions), and another for New Zealand in 1938 (Catholic missions).
