MASSA RINI, IPPOLITO. – Servite, theologian, b. at Lucca c. the mid-16th century, d. at Rome in January 1604. He taught theology in various places, especially at the University of Ferrara, for 25 years. He was also a prolific orator and twice provincial. Innocent IX, who had employed him when he was nuncio at Venice, summoned him to Rome and appointed him his theologian. Clement VIII also made use of him in the controversy de auxiliis. At the age of 54 he was elected bishop of Isina.
Among his writings are a short treatise De voto paupertatis and a Life of St Philip Benizi (Venice 1566). By order of Clement VIII, all his writings were preserved in the Vatican Library.
