STRAUSS, D. F.) by R. Bultmann (v. ANGELO), which so greatly troubles world Protestantism; b) with the elimination even of every central message (kerygma) of the Bible, undertaken by the Swiss theologian F. Buri; c) with the elimination of the mysteries (Sacraments) from the New Testament text carried out by Markus Barth, son of the well-known Karl Barth. In all three cases this is a final attack by modern rationalism and mythicism against the truth of the Bible. They seek to erase from the Bible: transcendent truths, the message of the cross and resurrection, and the fundamental Sacraments for the new life of God’s beloved children (e.g., by using dialectical artifices to make people believe that in the New Testament there is no passage speaking of Baptism as a Sacrament). Faced with such truly subversive attempts, S. P., which might be called the Catholic hymn to the absolute and inviolable Truth of the Bible, is a continual call to order: namely, that the Bible contains a truth above the rash dreams of contemporary mythicism, above rationalistic pride.
