The canons of Utrecht, in a letter between 1112 and 1114, to the archbishop of Cologne Frederick, who held Tanchelm, Everwacherus, and Manassès prisoner, aggravated the accusations out of hostility: Tanchelm was believed to be God, having divine honors attributed to him by his followers, who drank the water in which he had washed, considering it a sacrament of sanctification or a relic; he had celebrated a sacrilegious wedding rite with Mary, taking a statue of her as his bride and inviting his followers to offer gifts; he maintained immoral familiarity with girls and married women; he paraded with regal apparatus and insignia accompanied by an armed escort. Tanchelm particularly unsettled the population of Antwerp, which was poorly served spiritually by the only parish priest, a concubinary one, of the church of St. Michael. The heresy persisted even after Tanchelm's death, even infecting some of the canons. Burchard, bishop of Cambrai, in his reform efforts called St. Norbert around 1121-23, who, assisted by his disciple St. Evermond, succeeded in removing the abuses against the Eucharist, and many followers of Tanchelm returned the consecrated hosts they had kept hidden for many years. The blessed Waltmann, first abbot of St. Michael, dispersed the last Tanchelmites.
