TANAGRA. – Ancient diocese in Boeotia (Greece), suffragan of Corinth. The only known bishop is Esichius, as appears from a letter signed by him to the emperor Leo, after a provincial Synod in 458 (Le Quien, in Oriens Christianus in 4 patriarchatus digestus, II, Paris 1740, p. 212). It is currently a titular diocese.
L. Duchesne discussed a mutilated inscription datable to the 5th century in which the deceased places his tomb under the protection of a holy martyr whose name is missing (Inscription chrétienne de T., in Bull. de correspondance hellénique, 3 [1879], pp. 144–46). A second Christian epigraph was found in 1935 and belongs to the end of the 4th century (L. P. Milburn, An early christian epitaph from T., in The Journal of theological Studies, 1950, pp. 176–86).
