TANAGRA. - An ancient diocese in Boeotia (Greece), suffragan of Corinth. The only known bishop is Hesychius, as attested by a letter signed by him to the Emperor Leo following a provincial synod in 458 (Le Quien, in Oriens Christianus in 4 patriarchatus digestus, II, Paris 1740, p. 212). It is now a titular see.
L. Duchesne illustrated a mutilated inscription datable to the 5th century in which the deceased places his tomb under the protection of a martyr saint whose name is missing (Inscription chrétienne de T., in Bull. de correspondance hellénique, 3 [1879], pp. 144-46). A second Christian inscription was found in 1935 and dates to the end of the 4th century (L. P. Milburn, An early christian epitaph from T., in The Journal of theological Studies, 1950, p. 176-86).
