Tarija, Diocese of

TARIJA, DIOCESI. — City and diocese of Bolivia (South America).

It has an area of 24,786 sq km and a population of 96,000, of whom 95,000 are Catholics; it has 10 parishes served by 6 diocesan priests and 12 religious priests; it has 5 male and 2 female religious communities (Ann. Pont. 1953, p. 417). By the apostolic constitution Praedecestoribus Nostris of 11 November 1924, Pope Pius XI established it as a diocese, suffragan of the archdiocese of Sucre.
