TARIN, FRANCISCO DE PAULA. - Jesuit missionary, b. 12 Oct. 1849 at Godelleta (Valencia), d. at Seville on 12 Dec. 1910.
Having entered the Society of Jesus (1873) and been assigned to the apostolic ministries at Porto, then at Murcia, in 1888 he devoted himself to popular missions, especially in Andalusia, wearing himself out for the good of souls, with an intense life of labor, as confessor and preacher and by organizing Marian congregations and other pious works. He always took particular care of the poor and of children, for whom he established the association of St. Cassian.
Poor among the poor, gentle, humble, full of charity, he spent himself beyond all belief, visiting prisons and hospitals, entering homes and factories, in search of souls, everywhere spreading the teaching of the Gospel. Frail in health and suffering from a sore on his leg, he lived austerely, stealing hours from sleep, which he took fully dressed and seated uncomfortably on a chair, giving himself instead to an intense life of prayer and charity. His reputation for holiness was confirmed by many prodigies, and his cause for beatification was introduced in 1928.
