TARLATI DI PIETRAMALA, GALEOTTO. - Cardinal, son of Magio, born in Arezzo, died in Vienne in the Dauphiné in 1396.
He belonged to a Ghibelline family that ruled in Arezzo from the 11th to the 15th centuries, and he himself took an active part in the tumultuous life of his city. Having entered the ecclesiastical career at a young age, Urban VI on 18 September 1378 made him cardinal deacon of the title of S. Agata. In 1386 Tarlati and Cardinal Pileo di Prata rebelled against the Pope, who had put five cardinals to death in Genoa, and took refuge first in Pavia, from where they wrote a violent letter against Urban to the Bolognese (8 August 1386; published in Historisches Jahrbuch, 16 [1893], pp. 827-31), and then in Avignon with the antipope Clement VII, who recognized them in their cardinalatial dignity. Tarlati received the title of S. Giorgio al Velabro and many benefices. In Avignon he took part in the election of the antipope Benedict XIII, in whose favour he sent a letter to the Romans (1394; in E. Martène - U. Durand, op. cit. in bibl., I, cols. 1343-43), and served on a commission to end the schism. He was a man of virtue and learning and highly regarded in his time.
