EDMONDO, santo, martire, re d'ESTANGLIA. - N. a Norimberga nell'840, m. il 20 nov. 870. Di antica stirpe reale sassone, fin da fanciullo professò il cristianesimo; a 15 anni cominciò a regnare nell'Estanglia, di cui fu l'ultimo re. Ca. l'a. 866-67 i Danesi invasero le province orientali inglesi e nessuno dei principi poté resistere. E, stesso, rifiutando di sottomettersi, fu catturato e, dopo il supplizio delle saette, decapitato.
