CAPITOLINO, GIULIO. - According to the historiographical tradition he is one of the six authors of the Historia Augusta, a collection of biographies of various Roman emperors; the lives of Antoninus Pius, Marcus Aurelius, Lucius Verus, Pertinax, Macrinus and other minor ones are attributed to him. But, while some recent critics deny even the existence of the Scriptores Historiae Augustae, others attribute to C. properly a reworking of the whole work for the purpose of giving it unity. The last period of the Constantinian government can be fixed as the time of his flourishing; on the whole the value of his writings is slight and one notices in them a pro-Senatorial tendency.
