CHATELAIN, Emile-Louis-Marie. - Paleographer and French librarian, b. at Montrouge on 26 Nov. 1831, d. in Paris on 26 Nov. 1933. In 1881 he became librarian at the library of the Sorbonne, was appointed Assistant Curator in 1888, and then Curator in 1904, succeeding J. de Chantepie; he held this position until 1925. The École des Hautes Études also counted him as a valuable collaborator for many years.
The vast and multifaceted work of Ch. is contained in more than 350 works and articles which bear witness to the world of scholarship for what they owe to him in the fields of paleography, lexicography and Latin philology, textual criticism, and the study of manuscripts and libraries. It suffices to recall his monumental Paléographie des classiques latins, to the compilation and publication of which he devoted himself from 1884 to 1900 (Paris, with 210 plates); the Chartularium Universitatis Parisiensis (4 vols., ibid. 1889-97) in collaboration with Fr. Desnilla; Unciallo scriptura (ibid. 1901-1902); and the large number of articles which appeared from time to time in the Revue de philologie and in the Revue des bibliothèques, which he himself founded.
