LAYAMON. - English ecclesiastic of the 13th century, whose name is a variant of Lawman (man of law).
He is the author of the first poem in English on the legendary origins of British history (down to 689), derived in large part from Monmouth's Historia regum Britanniae in Wace's Norman version. The poem, in alliterative verse, possesses notable literary merits, but it is important above all as an Arthurian source, and alongside the story of Arthur it tells the story of Lear and the story of Cymbeline. L. also made use of Breton and Norman sources.
