LUIGI d'E. — Cardinal, born at Ferrara on 25 December 1538 to Ercole II and Renata di Francia, died at Rome on 30 December 1586. He was archbishop of Ferrara and, in February 1561, was created cardinal by Pius IV. He enjoyed the protection of France. He would have liked to renounce the purple in order to marry, but the Pope did not permit this. In 1580, because of incidents provoked by the arrogance of his servants, Gregory XIII expelled him from the Papal States; but a few months later he revoked the ban through the intervention of the French ambassador. From 1565 to 1572 Luigi counted Torquato Tasso among his gentlemen. — Vedi tav. XLIII.
