Poplifugia

POPLIFUGIA. - A festival of July 5 in the most ancient Roman calendar, the only one that preceded the Nones of a month.

Separated by the shortest interval from the Nonae Caprotinae, it seems to form with these a small organic cycle: this also emerges from the etiological legend of the two festivals, according to which the first commemorates the flight of the Romans in the battle against the Fidenates, while the second commemorates their final victory. More importantly, the Nonae Caprotinae are a festival of Juno, whereas the P. are defined as feriae Iovi. Another etiological legend traces the festival to the disappearance of Romulus. Nothing is known of the rites of the festival: only the name itself would suggest a ritual flight.
