Bull confirming the rule of the Augustinian Servants of Mary

1 As we lift our eyes about us, and contemplate the flock of the Lord committed to us, though unworthy, by divine disposition, and everywhere according to the duty of pastoral office, we willingly bestow vigilant care, insofar as it is permitted us from on high, so that the cultivators of the vineyard of the Lord God of Hosts may so attend to the cultivation of salvation, that the same vineyard, extending its scattered branches, may produce an abundance of salutary fruits. And although apostolic solicitude is directed toward each individual cultivator of this kind, namely ecclesiastical persons, yet toward religious men, who, with worldly enticements relegated, labor without ceasing in the study of pious life devoted to the contemplation of heavenly things, it is fitting that we apply a more inclined diligence, inasmuch as they are to be cherished more abundantly by apostolic protection for the favor of religion.
2 § 1. Indeed you, who profess and observe the order of St. Augustine approved and confirmed by the Apostolic See, and with the devotion of affection which you bear toward the Blessed Virgin Mary glorious, assume for yourselves a name from Her, humbly calling yourselves Servants of the same Virgin, and the said order of St. Augustine, according to the pious and honest institutions of your rule edited in honor of the same Virgin, you have laudably observed hitherto, and observe: and to you by special privileges, the said See has granted, that you may celebrate a general chapter, and in the same chapter elect for yourselves a general prior, who may freely exercise correction of your brothers in the order and other matters which pertain to his office; and that you may receive for burial those who shall choose to be buried in your places. From which things being inspected by those giving heed, it is sufficiently indicated that the said your rule by the same See exists in some manner expressly confirmed.
3 § 2. We, however, who willingly exhibit devotion toward the Virgin herself our Lady, as much as we are able, not wishing that anyone against you and the rule itself may be able to cast any imputation of detraction, lest the same rule should not have the full firmness of apostolic protection, to remove all matter of hesitation concerning these things from the minds of whosoever, inclined by your supplications, do expressly confirm by apostolic authority the rule and its aforesaid institutions, and also approve them, and fortify them by the protection of the present writing, and grant the same to you.
4 § 3. Decreeing that the same is to be inviolably observed by you for perpetual times.
5 § 4. Let it be lawful for no one at all of men, etc.
6 Given at the Lateran on the 13th day of February, in the first year of our pontificate.
7 Given on 11 February 1304, pontificate year 1.

5 § 4. A nessun uomo dunque sia lecito, ecc.
