Testo inglese
Pius, bishop, servant of the servants of God, for perpetual remembrance of the matter.
1 Since to preserve order and precedence in matters pertains most especially to the Roman Pontiff, and order in this is chiefly observed in the arrangement of those who precede or follow, having taken counsel with our venerable brethren, the cardinals of the holy Roman Church, with exact and diligent deliberation, by apostolic authority, in the tenor of these presents, and with the counsel and assent of our venerable fathers, we have determined, decreed, ordained and commanded that our notaries (whom custom, not without reason, calls protonotaries, as it were by a certain distinction of excellence) shall henceforth not dare to place themselves before the venerable and sacred order of bishops.
2 But indeed in our chapel, in the second bench, in the second seat after the bishops, they shall sit according to the order of their institution. In public consistories, however (where, concerning matters which they transact, they are accustomed to be asked so that authentic documents may be drawn up), four of those who are called numeraries, or, if they are absent, an equal number of others, according to their institution, the seniors according to the rank of the apostolic see, shall hold a more honorable place and sit nearer to our See. In all other places, both in the Curia and outside, everywhere among peoples and lands, our notaries shall follow all archbishops and bishops and yield to them, and what we sanction concerning bishops, we extend by apostolic authority to the elected and confirmed heads of cathedral churches.
3 But indeed in our chapel, in the Linonian bench, namely in the second seat, after the bishops, they sat separately, according to the order of their institution. In public consistories, however (where, concerning matters which they transact, they are accustomed to be asked so that authentic documents may be drawn up), four of those who are called numeraries, or, if they are absent, an equal number of others, according to their institution, seniors, according to the rank of the apostolic see, shall hold a more honorable place, and shall sit nearest to our See. In other places, however, both in the Curia and outside, everywhere among peoples and lands, let all our notaries follow the archbishops and bishops and yield to them, and what we ordain concerning bishops, we extend equally to those elected and confirmed to the cathedral churches by apostolic authority.
