AETERNA IMAGO ALTISSIMI. - Hymn of the Roman Breviary at Matins for the feast of Christ the King. Its author is Fr. Vittorio Genovesi, S.J., who, adapting himself to the theological and moral sense of the feast and to the thoughts of the encyclical Quas primas of Pius XI, invites all classes of humanity to offer their homage and their subjection to Christ, king of the ages, arbiter of minds and hearts (st. 1-2). He won this universal dominion for himself through the Redemption, by which he ransomed men from the slavery of the devil (st. 3-4); therefore, grateful and obedient, the rulers of nations, and above all magistrates and teachers, must confess him publicly by their manner of governing, judging and teaching, just as every man must place his happiness and his pride in observing above all the laws of the Lord (st. 5-6).
