AGRICOLA, MARTIN (Martinus Sore). — Musician, son of a peasant, he Latinized his surname; born probably on 6 January 1486 at Schwiebus, died on 10 June 1556 at Magdeburg, where he spent his entire life, directing from 1525 the choir of the evangelical church. He was also a composer, but above all one of the most distinguished theorists of his time; his principal work, Musica Instrumentalis Deutsch (various editions from 1528 to 1545), written in German rather than Latin as was customary, in order to facilitate its cultural diffusion, is one of the most important sources on instrumental practice of the period. A champion of evangelical music, he was in contact with Martin Luther.
