AGRICOLA, Martin (Martinus Sore). - Musician, the son of a peasant, he Latinized his own surname; b. probably on 6 January 1486 at Schwiebus, d. on 10 June 1556 at Magdeburg, where he spent his whole life, directing, from 1525 onward, the choir of the evangelical school. He was also a composer, but above all one of the most distinguished theorists of his time; his principal work, Musica Instrumentalis Deutsch (various editions from 1528 to 1545), written in German rather than in Latin, as was the custom, in order to facilitate its cultural diffusion, is one of the most important sources on the instrumental practice of the time. An advocate of evangelical music, he was in contact with Martin Luther.
