AUBRY, PIERRE. — Musicologist, b. in Paris on 14 Feb. 1874, d. in Dieppe on 31 Aug. 1910. Learned in Oriental languages, he was a keen scholar of medieval music; he taught courses on the history of music at the École des hautes études sociales in Paris.
Among his numerous works, all significant though in part debatable, the following deserve mention: the valuable studies collected under the title Mélanges de musicologie critique (Paris 1900–1903) and Essais de musicologie comparée (ibid. 1905), and the admirable editions of the Roman de Fauvel (ibid. 1900–1903) and the Cents motets du XIIIe siècle (ibid. 1908); among his most widely circulated works is the study on Troubadours et Trouvères (ibid. 1909).
