Aubry, Noël-Véran

AUBRY, NOËL-VÉRAN. - Ascetical writer, b. at Orgon (Avignon) on 23 March 1719, d. at Avignon on 8 January 1756. Having entered the Congregation of the Mission in 1739, a priest in 1742, from 1747 until almost his death he was chaplain and then parish priest at St. Martha's in Tarascon.

He published a Manuale christianorum in quattuor libros divisum: opus tum christianis omnibus tum maxime religiosis atque ecclesiasticis viris perutile, which his contemporaries called "worthy of the Imitation of Christ" and which is still today widespread among the clergy (Malines 1906). Published anonymously in Paris in 1754, it went through many editions and was translated, under various titles, into French (1774) and Spanish (1808).
