ANDRIVEAU, APOLLINE. - Daughter of Charity, b. in France at Saint-Pourçain (Allier) on 7 May 1810. Having embraced the religious life in Paris (1833), she was assigned to the girls' school and to the service of the poor for more than sixty years, first at Troyes (1834-72), then at Caen (1872-87) and finally at Montolieu (Aude), where she died on 23 Feb. 1895. At Troyes Sister A. was favored with the visions that gave rise to the devotion of the Red Scapular of the Passion. On 26 July 1846 she had a vision of Jesus, who held in his right hand a scarlet scapular on which was painted the cross with the instruments of the passion and around it the inscription: "Holy Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ, save us!" On the reverse, the image of the Most Sacred Hearts and the invocation: "Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, protect us!" Pius IX approved and granted indulgences to the new scapular (25 June 1847); moreover (1848) he authorized the superior general of the Mission to delegate any priest to bless and impose this scapular "not as a badge of a confraternity, but as a simple devotion."
