ANDRONICO. — IV (v.) Epifane, king of Syria, during the period when he went to Cilicia to suppress a revolt in Tarso and Mallo (169 B.C.); cf. II Mach. 4:30–38. Instigated by Menelao (v.), A. treacherously killed the pious Onia III (v.). Almost simultaneously, he also killed a young nephew of the king, the son of his deceased brother and predecessor Seleuco IV (cf. Diodoro Siculo, XXX, 7, 2; Giovanni Antiocheno, framm. 58, in C. Müller, Fragmenta hist. graec., ed. Didot, IV, Paris 1868, p. 558 ff.). For these two crimes (of which II Mach. recounts only the first, while the profane authors recount only the second), Antioco had him executed upon his return.
