ANONYMOUS OF PIACENZA. - This is the designation for an unknown person who made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land with some companions, leaving an account of his journey, in which internal evidence allows us to fix the date of the pilgrimage to 570. Since he introduces himself by narrating that, on setting out from Piacenza, he invoked the protection of St. Antoninus, martyr (apparently under Diocletian), much venerated there, through a misunderstanding it was long believed that the pilgrim was St. Antoninus himself. It is due to H. Grisar to have definitively dispelled the confusion. In the writing, a certain readiness to believe the tales of the guides is deplored.
