ANONYMOUS PILGRIM OF PIACENZA. — This designation refers to an unknown person who traveled to the Holy Land with some companions, leaving behind an account of his journey. Certain internal details allow us to fix the date of the pilgrimage to 570. Since he begins his narrative by invoking the protection of St. Antoninus, a martyr (apparently under Diocletian) greatly venerated there, a misunderstanding led many to believe for a long time that the pilgrim was the same St. Antoninus. It was H. Grisar who definitively dispelled this confusion. The account also reveals a certain credulity in accepting the tales of local guides.
