ANNUNZIATINE OF LOMBARDY. - A congregation of religious women, also called Sisters of St. Ambrose or of St. Marcellina, which arose in Pavia in 1408 on the initiative of some pious ladies of Pavia and Venice, under the direction of the Benedictine d. Beccaria. The rule of St. Augustine was adopted. In 1431 the foundresses pronounced their solemn vows, and in 1439 they were approved by the Holy See. Under the government of m. Giovanna of Parma the Congregation underwent considerable development, which lasted throughout the whole of the 16th century. The mother general resided in Pavia, and three visitatrixes had to travel every year to all the houses. To avoid this continual movement, which brought great harm to the spirit of the institution, St. Pius V replaced the visitatrixes with the secular clergy. They were suppressed under Napoleon, and today only a few houses remain in Northern Italy.
