ANGELICHE di SAN PAOLO. – A female religious institute, founded in Milan by s. Antonio Maria Zaccaria and Countess Ludovica Torelli di Guastalla, to assist the Barnabites in their religious work among the people. Approved by Paul III on 15 January 1535, and reorganized after the dissensions provoked by the rebel Antonia Negri, in 1552 it accepted enclosure in accordance with the prescriptions of the Council of Trent. S. Carlo made use of it for the reform of monasteries. Suppressed in 1810, it was revived through the efforts of Fr Mauri in 1879. Benedict XV dispensed it from enclosure, authorizing it to undertake works of education and preservation. It has 20 houses in Italy, Belgium, and France, with more than 200 religious.
