ANGELICHE OF ST PAUL. – A female religious institute founded in Milan by St Anthony Mary Zaccaria and Countess Ludovica Torelli of Guastalla to assist the Barnabites in their religious work among the people. Approved by Paul III on 15 January 1535, and reorganised after the disturbances caused by the rebellious Antonia Negri, in 1552 it accepted enclosure in accordance with the decrees of the Council of Trent. St Charles Borromeo employed it in the reform of monasteries. Suppressed in 1810, it was restored in 1879 through the efforts of Fr Mauri. Benedict XV dispensed it from enclosure, authorising it to engage in educational and preservative works. It has 20 houses in Italy, Belgium and France, with over 200 religious.
