ANGELI, PIETRO ANGELO degli. - Man of letters, b. at Barga in 1517, d. at Pisa in 1596. He lived at Bologna, where he was a disciple of Amasco, at Venice and at Constantinople, in the service of France, at Milan, Florence, Pisa. A humanist of exquisite literary taste, he also cultivated philosophy, teaching Aristotelian philosophy at Rome. Because of his fame as a critic he was chosen by Tasso to examine the Gerusalemme Liberata. More than the Cynegeticon and the eclogues in Virgilian imitation, we recall the Siriade (Syrias), a poem in twelve books on the crusade of Godfrey of Bouillon, printed at Florence in 1591. The conjecture that Tasso drew inspiration from this work of A. for his poem is false; indeed the opposite is true. Nevertheless it seems probable that the Siriade was present, in several places, to the poet of the Crusades in the composition of the Gerusalemme Conquistata, on account of a greater adherence to historical reality.
