MAURI, EGIDIO. - Dominican theologian and cardinal, born at Montefiascone on 9 Dec. 1828, died at Ferrara on 12 March 1896.
He entered religious life at Viterbo (4 Aug. 1850), where he was master of novices, professor of theology, and regent of studies; subsequently prior at Noto (1857), at Rome in the convent of S. Sabina (1860), at Düsseldorf (1867), and then vicar general of the Congregation of S. Marco (1870). Preconized bishop of Rieti on 22 Dec. 1871, he was consecrated on 14 Jan. 1872; after 17 years he was transferred to the united sees of Osimo and Cingoli (12 June 1888); promoted to the archiepiscopal see of Ferrara (12 June 1893), on 14 May 1894 he was created cardinal with the title of S. Bartolomeo all'Isola.
A respected theologian and distinguished orator, he left various
works: Lettere pastorali ed altri scritti (Milan 1886); Il Rosario, ossia la preghiera che loda, invoca, conforta, insegna, trionfa (ibid. 1892); Scritti vari (2 vols., ibid. 1892).
