MASSIAS, Juan, Blessed. - Dominican, b. at Ribera (Plasencia) on 2 March 1585, d. at Lima on 17 Sept. 1645. Driven by the desire to feel himself more of a stranger on earth, he set out for Peru (1620) and there, after two years, he took the habit of the lay brothers in the Convent of St. Mary Magdalene in Lima (23 Jan. 1622). Throughout his life he exercised the office of porter in that same convent.

An example of every virtue, he edified all who knew him. A friend of the poor, he conversed with them willingly, seeking every means to relieve them of their miseries. Gifted with the discernment of spirits and with a rare prudence, he was an enlightened counselor. A lover of penance, he ardently desired martyrdom. He worked miracles in life and in death. He was in close friendship with the blessed Martin de Porres. His cult was approved by Gregory XVI (22 Oct. 1837). Feast on 18 Sept.
