MARIALES, XANTES. - Dominican theologian, born in Venice c. 1578, died there at the end of April 1660. He studied in Spain and, out of homage to that nation, changed his surname Pinardi to

M., by which he is known. Having returned to Italy, from 1610 he taught theology in Padua, where he was also regent of studies until 1624. In that year he retired to Venice to dedicate himself completely to his studies and lived a very secluded life amidst universal esteem.

In this solitude he wrote various works, among which stand out the Controversiae ad universam Summam theologiae s. Thomae A. necnon ad IV libros Magistri sententiarum (Venice 1624). In 1638 he finished another massive work, which due to various vicissitudes could not be published until 1660: Bibliotheca interpretum ad universam Summam theologiae d. Thomae A. (ibid. 1660). Because of the excessive exaltation of the doctrine of s. Thomas, compared almost to Revelation, it was placed on the Index (June 22, 1662). With his habitual vehemence, he participated in the struggle against Gallicanism and wrote (under the pseudonym of Pietro P. Torelli): Quali presagimenti possono haversi delle presenti sconvolte dell'Austria e della Spagna e da i progressi de gl'eretici e de' Francesi (Cologne 1643) and Stravaganze nuovamente seguite nel cristianissimo regno di Francia (ibid. 1646). Under the pseudonym of S. Campeggi he published: Enormità inaudite nuovamente uscite in luce nel cristianissimo regno di Francia (Frankfurt 1649). To please Louis XIV, the Venetian Senate ordered M. to leave the Republic. He went first to Milan, then to Ferrara, and finally to Bologna. Shortly before dying he was able to return to Venice. In Bologna he published a commentary on the Quaestiones disputatae of s. Thomas (1658).
