MÜLLER, JOHANNES. - Historian, b. in Schaffhausen on 3 Jan. 1752, d. in Kassel on 11 May 1809.
He is among the first historians who, overcoming the Enlightenment's aversion to the "Gothic" age, rediscover the fascination of the Middle Ages (Reisen der Päpste [1782]). In his masterpiece, the Geschichte der Schweizerischen Eidgenossenschaft (1786), he portrays the Swiss Middle Ages as an age of organic Christian civilization.
M., a Protestant and a Pietist, still maintains the eighteenth-century antipathy toward monks, but he is among the first to outline the medieval papacy as a shaper of civil liberties, even though his vision arises from a precise and contingent polemic against the state absolutism of his own time.
