ANDRONICUS OF ALEXANDRIA. - Monophysite patriarch (617-22), who succeeded Anastasius at a time when discord among the Monophysite Churches had been composed. The departure of the Byzantines from Alexandria, following the advance of the Persians, enabled him to be the first to enter the city where the Melkite or imperial party, upholders of the Chalcedonian dogma, held sway. His biographer praised him for having thrown down many pagan shrines still resisting in the Nile valley. He died in 622, when Egypt was under Persian rule.
