ANDRONICUS OF ALEXANDRIA. - Monophysite patriarch (617-22), successor of Anastasius, when the discord among the Monophysite Churches had been settled. The departure of the Byzantines from Alexandria, following the advance of the Persians, allowed him to enter first into the city, where the Melkite or imperial party, supporter of the dogma of Chalcedon, held sway. His biographer praises him for having thrown down many sanctuaries of paganism, still resisting in the Nile valley. He died in 622, when Egypt was under the Persians.
