AUBRY, JEAN-BAPTISTE. – Missionary, b. 5 Oct 1844 at Ourscamps, d. in Kwei chow on 10 Sept 1882. He studied at the seminary of Beauvais and then in Rome; ordained priest in 1868, he taught dogmatic theology at the diocesan seminary for three years. In 1874 he entered the Paris Foreign Missions Society, and in ’75 he set out for Kwei chow, where he displayed diligent and enterprising zeal. His name is associated with several publications on Christianity in China and with his extensive correspondence, all of which were published by his brother, who was also a priest. Noteworthy are his pessimistic judgments on the Chinese people.
