AUBRY, JEAN-BAPTISTE. - Missionary, b. Oct. 5, 1844 at Ourscamps, d. in Kwei chow on Sept. 10, 1882. He studied at the seminary of Beauvais and then in Rome; a priest in 1868, he was for three years professor of dogmatics at the diocesan seminary. In 1874 he entered the Society of Foreign Missions of Paris, and in '75 he set out for Kwei chow, where he showed diligent and enterprising zeal. His name is linked to several publications on Christianity in China and to his rich correspondence: all of it published by his brother, himself also a priest. Noteworthy are his pessimistic judgments on the Chinese people.
