AUBRY, JEAN-BAPTISTE. – Missionary, born on 5 October 1844 at Ourscamps, died in Kwei chow on 10 September 1882. He studied at the seminary of Beauvais and then in Rome; ordained a priest in 1868, he was for three years professor of dogmatic theology at the diocesan seminary. In 1874 he entered the Society of the Foreign Missions of Paris, and in ’75 departed for Kwei chow, where he showed diligent and enterprising zeal. His name is linked to several publications on Christianity in China and to his extensive correspondence: all of it was published by his brother, who was also a priest. His pessimistic judgments on the Chinese people are noteworthy.
