Eshmon

ESMÓN. — Principal god of the Phoenician city of Sidon, consistently identified by the Greeks with their Asclepius. The etymology of the name E. is uncertain; it perhaps derives from the Semitic root fin, which meant “name.” He was regarded as the god of life and medicine. Most of his temples stood not far from medicinal springs. He was depicted equipped with a staff around which a serpent was entwined.
