ESHMON. - Dio principale della città fenicia di Sidone, identificato dai Greci costantemente con il loro Asclepio. L'etimologia del nome E. non è certa; sta forse in rapporto con la radice semitica fin, che significava « nome ». He was regarded as the god of life and medicine. Most of his temples stood not far from medicinal springs. He was depicted provided with a staff around which a serpent coiled. Giuseppe Furlusi
