FERRARA, ANTONIO da. - Poet, b. in Ferrara in 1315, d. there between 1371 and 1374. He is also known as A. Beccari or Del Beccaio. Of his life, spent wandering in Bologna, Forlì, Padua, Milan, at the courts of the Pepoli, the Ordelaffi, the Carraresi, the Visconti, there is a trace in his Canzoniere (the critical edition is lacking), where political accents of a Ghibelline character alternate with motifs of love. His poetry oscillates between the learned current and the popular one, without managing to achieve stylistic unity. The seven chapters to the Virgin, composed between 1340 and 1357, bear witness to an attempted religious reform.
