FERRARA, ANTONIO da. — Poet, born in Ferrara in 1315, died there between 1371 and 1374. He is also known as A. Beccari or Del Beccasio. Traces of his life are found in Bologna, Forlì, Padua, and Milan, at the courts of the Pepoli, Ordelaffi, Carraresi, and Visconti, in his *Canzoniere* (which lacks a critical edition), where political themes of Ghibelline character alternate with love motifs. His poetry oscillates between the learned and the popular currents without achieving stylistic unity. Evidence of an attempted religious conversion is found in the seven chapters to the Virgin, composed between 1340 and 1357.
