FAURIEL, CLAUDE-CHARLES. - Writer, b. at St-Étienne on 21 Oct. 1772, d. in Paris on 15 July 1844. He maintained cultural relations with the leading French and foreign scholars of his time (Mme de Staël, B. Constant, the Schlegel brothers, Oznam, Stendhal, Thierry, Mérimée, etc.) and, in particular, was a guest at Brusuglio of Manzoni, whose tragedies he translated and with whom he was spiritually close.
From 1830 he taught Romance philology at the University of Paris, contributing through his teaching and writings to historical and critical studies, though his views were not always accurate, they were original and stimulating. Among his works, the following are especially noteworthy: *Histoire de la Gaule méridionale sous la domination des conquérants germains* (4 vols., Paris 1836); *Histoire de la littérature provençale* (3 vols., ibid. 1846); *Dante et les origines de la langue et de la littérature italiennes* (2 vols., ibid. 1834).
