FORBES, EDWARD. - English naturalist, b. at Douglas on 12 Feb. 1815, d. in London on 23 Nov. 1854. He is the pioneer of marine exploration with the dredge and of the biogeography of the sea (zoogeographic charts).
F. was an upholder of the constancy and immutability of species. "Varieties" are for him temporary and not incipient species: "every true species presents in its individuals certain specific characteristic traits that distinguish it from every other, as if the Creator had impressed a particular seal or mark on each type."
