Fano, Giulio

FANO, GIULIO. - Physician and physiologist, b. in Mantua on 29 March 1856, d. there on 27 Sept. 1930. He was professor of general physiology at the University of Rome. To him is owed the demonstration of the inhibitory action of encephalic centers on spinal reflexes and of the oscillations of atrial tone in Emys europaea. He concerned himself with general questions, treating of the origin of life and of the evolution of species, and ended by recognizing the more philosophical than scientific character of evolution.
