becoming its vice-prefect in 1786, and then prefect in 1801. He died on 7 June 1803 at Bhangulpore.
In the Introduction to the Journey to India he set forth the events of his missionary life from 1755 to 1774, together with the political events of northern India. His principal writings are: Geographical Treatise on Nepal and Tibet; Description of the Religious Systems in Hindustan; Translation into Italian of the Sacred Books Argiun Ghita, Lanka, Mul Pangi and Giansagr, collected by A. De Gubernatis (Scritti del p. M. della T. [Florence 1878]), who pointed out their importance for the history of Oriental studies.
