MARCO D'AVIANO. - Capuchin, born at Aviano on 17 Nov. 1631, died at Vienna on 13 Aug. 1699. Having been ordained a priest, he devoted himself to preaching, exercising a powerful and irresistible fascination over innumerable crowds.
In 1683 he contributed to the liberation of Vienna, besieged by the Turks, by maintaining peace among the commanders and urging them to timely action. He was counsellor, encourager, and peacemaker during the sieges and battles of Budapest (1684), Neuhäusel (1685), Budapest (1686), Mohacz (1687), and Belgrado (1688). In order to strengthen the war against the Turks, in 1684 he contributed to Venice’s entry into the Holy League and to its preservation despite the practical Polish defection.
