MARCO D'AVANO. - Capuchin, born in Aviano on 17 Nov. 1631, died in Vienna on 13 Aug. 1699. After ordination he devoted himself to preaching, exercising a vivid and irresistible fascination over countless multitudes.
In 1683 he cooperated in the liberation of Vienna besieged by the Turks, maintaining peace among the commanders and urging them to timely action. He served as counsellor, instigator and peacemaker during the sieges and battles of Buda (1684), Neuhäusel (1685), Buda (1686), Mohács (1687) and Belgrade (1688). To strengthen the anti-Turkish war he cooperated in 1684 in securing Venice’s entry into the Holy League and in maintaining it despite Poland’s practical defection.
