LEOPOLDO da CASTELNOVO. – Capuchin, whose family name was Mandic, born at Castelnuovo di Cattaro on 12 May 1866, died at Padua on 30 July 1942. He entered the convent in 1885 and was ordained a priest in 1890. After brief stays in various houses, in 1906 he was transferred to Padua, where he remained until his death.
In fragile health and unsuited to preaching, he was unable to fulfil his ardent missionary vocation among the Eastern peoples; but for nearly 40 years he was the confessor of all manner of persons, exercising a hidden yet far-reaching apostolate. A model of Franciscan virtues, after his death his reputation for holiness spread rapidly, and in January 1946 the diocesan informative process was opened in Padua.
