LEOPOLD OF GAICHE, Blessed. - Apostolic missionary of the Friars Minor, b. at Gaiche (Perugia) on 30 Oct. 1732, d. at Monteluco (Spoleto) on 2 Apr. 1815. Ordained a priest in 1757, he taught philosophy and theology for several years, subsequently holding various important offices, among them those of guardian, custos and provincial minister.
He sought to revive sacred preaching and substantially adopted the method of St. Leonard of Port Maurice in giving missions to the people. For forty-seven years he preached continuously, though without going beyond the borders of Umbria and of the territory that then belonged to the Papal State, as appears from the Diario delle S. Missioni, written by him. He erected 73 Stations of the Cross and restored very many, raising commemorative crosses wherever he preached. He established a retreat at the convent of Monteluco near Spoleto, dwelling there until his death. He was beatified by Leo XIII on 12 March 1893.
